Back In The Saddle Again

"Restaurants are like thoroughbred racehorses," says Jeff Back. "owning one is glamorous, but finding a winner is hard as hell." Just how hard? Back, a man who left the business after twenty years - only to return three months later - says restaurants have the highest mortality rate of any new business: Approximately nine out of ten go belly up in the first two years. So why is a smart businessman like Back back in the restaurant business? He's not - he's in the restaurant real estate business.

Three and a half years ago Back, thirty-nine, resigned his job as president of Charley Brown's Restaurants. "Personally," he says, "I was tired of the corporate life and lifestyle." So he found a way to make money off fellow restaurateurs. His basic premise was this: Restaurants come and go, but the land they stand on remains. As he explains it: "I had thought about opening my own restaurant. But having worked with brokers for a number of years, I realized that there was a real need for somebody who could talk the language of the restaurateur as well as deal in a real estate environment."

Today that realization is J. Back & Associates Restaurant Real Estate, a three-year-old Danville company that exclusively handles restaurant real estate in the Bay Area. They have brought Pacific Pasta to San Ramon, Flambeau's to Pleasant Hill, and the Uptown Cafe to Danville. You might just say that Back's business is running like racehorses.
